The AI model for Subject Selection and Eye Focus has been updated to better handle group portraits. Lightroom Classic can now import, edit, and sync WebP files. It can also export WebP files to other formats, but not back to WebP. New Generate using Firefly commands export the active photo and passes it over to Firefly, where you can add a prompt to edit the photo using a variety of AI models. It can be a quick way of editing a photo, especially if you don’t have Photoshop or the needed skills.
In Classic you find this under Edit > Generate using Firefly and in Desktop it’s an option on the Share menu. Use the Download button at the top of the screen to download it to your computer, and then import it into Lightroom if you want to add it to your catalog / cloud library. You can also select File menu > Generate using Firefly > Generate Video from Image (Classic) / Share menu > Generate Video (Desktop) where it generates a short video clip based on your photo.
Being able to access other AI models is all the rage in software at the moment, and in this release, you can now use a simplified version of Topaz’s Generative Upscale model to increase the size of a photo by 2x or 4x. To do so, go to Photo menu (or right-click) > Generative Upscale. Select Upscale 2x or Upscale 4x and decide whether you would like the photo stacked with the original. Unlike Topaz’s own app, there are no options to control settings.
It costs Generative Credits, which are shown in the dialog, even if you’re not happy with the result. We haven’t been that impressed with the results, particularly on noisy photos. Super Resolution preserves natural texture better during a 2x upscale, so you can add your own choice of noise reduction and sharpening, whereas Generative Upscale smooths some areas (notice the mother bird’s brown wing) and oversharpens others.
Most of Lightroom’s tools are included in your subscription and run locally on your computer, but a few of the AI tools run on Adobe’s servers. To share resources fairly among all subscribers, some tools cost “Generative Credits” Your subscription includes a number of credits each month, just like it includes an allotted amount of cloud space. As this is a rapidly evolving area, check Adobe’s website for the latest information: https://www.Lrq.me/gencredits You can check how many credits you have left this month by visiting your account on Adobe’s website.
On the desktop, you can also go to Preferences > Account > Monthly Generative Credits. The Crop interface has been updated on iPhone and Android. All of the existing features are still there, but they’ve moved around a bit, and there are new pop-ups for social media aspect ratios. This has also changed the Geometry interface, although the functionality remains the same. This is a major update so lots of work was put into the new features, but it did also include bug fixes.
Adobe only publishes the ones that were reported by users. To update on the desktop, go to Help menu > Updates or click the Update button in the CC app. The update servers take a while to push the updates around the world to avoid overloading the servers. You can also open the Creative Cloud app, click the … icon (top right), and select Check for Updates to give it a nudge. To update on mobile, visit the App Store (iOS) / Play Store (Android).
The eBooks for Adobe Lightroom Classic – The Missing FAQ and Adobe Lightroom – Edit on the Go have been fully updated to include the new features, as have the online versions (available for current Premium Members). The eBooks can be downloaded immediately after purchase. If you already have a current Premium Membership for the relevant eBook, the latest eBooks are available for download in your Members Area.
