Owning a 32:9 display has massively boosted my productivity. I’m never going back to 16:9 screens.
Dave has a bachelor of arts degree in journalism, and has been writing professionally since 2006. Over the years he's produced content for many global brands, including IGN, PC Gamer, TechRadar and Tom's Guide. His main passions revolve around PC hardware, display tech and gaming. Dave is absolutely obsessed with cutting-edge PC technology. He's been building his own rigs since ye olden days of 2004 and has owned an embarrassing number of GPUs over that timeframe. When he’s not obsessing over frame rates, Dave can normally be found fretting over dead pixels and OLED burn-in.
He first fell in love with OLED displays in 2015, and has spent the ensuing years obliterating his bank balance buying “Light Emitting Diode” screens. In his off hours, Dave can normally be found sweating unbearably over Arsenal results. He might take footba… sorry “soccer”, a little too seriously. Please bear with me as I briefly indulge in a First World Problem of the tech variety: I can no longer work on a 16:9 monitor.
Hold back your tears … if you can. Around 18 months or so ago, I bought my first ever super ultrawide monitor. At the time, even during a particularly alluring Black Friday sale, purchasing such a display felt like a risky decision. Would I really feel the benefits of such a uniquely proportioned screen? Spoiler: You bet your bottom dollar I have. Owning a 32:9 aspect ratio monitor has completely transformed the way I work.
Not only has this panel upgrade made me more productive, it’s also released me from the space-consuming shackles of a multi-screen PC setup. As someone who has worked from home since early 2020, I’ve spent way too much time obsessing over the layout of my home office to best cater for my Windows 11 PC. I've pondered long and hard on the 32:9 vs 21:9 monitor debate, and now I'm firmly of the belief that wider is the way to go.
Before I settled on a 32:9 screen, I owned some borderline unhinged setups. A three-screen monstrosity that consisted of a 48-inch TV, a vertically mounted screen, and an ultrawide monitor was my go-to for most of the pandemic. Then I moved onto a slightly less chaotic work setup that “merely” contained a 55-inch TV and a 34-inch, 21:9 monitor. And now? I’ve finally found the perfect balance: a gigantic, super-stretched single screen.
Enter my 49-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G9. When it comes to boosting productivity, owning a 32:9 ultrawide is a superpower. If you’re fortunate enough to have so much work-boosting screen real estate at your disposal, becoming more efficient at your job is basically a given. The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 is a 49-inch super ultrawide gaming monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate. Beefing up my screen size and stretching out my aspect ratio has helped make me more focused.
The biggest benefit of owning a 32:9 screen for work? Displaying three windows of ample and equal size is a breeze. For years, I swore by 21:9 displays (especially when Dell started releasing OLED ultrawide monitors). As soon as you upgrade from a 16:9 panel, the benefits of using an ultrawide monitor quickly become clear. Yet even at their best, 21:9 screens can really only replicate a dual-monitor setup.
That’s not the case with a 32:9 display. My Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED essentially acts as three screens in one. In terms of work, writing/image editing on a super ultrawide is a blissful joy. Rather than having to go through the fuss of setting up dual displays, a 32:9 panel is simply more straightforward to use. Not just for work, but for play too. If I’ve made the upgrade to a super ultrawide monitor seem incredibly work-focused, and thus as alluring as steamed celery, I apologize.
Don’t get me wrong: in terms of productivity, these screens rule. But you also want to have fun, right? If you want to experience the ultimate peak of PC games, super ultrawide immersion is where it’s at. I won’t lie: 32:9 gaming in 2026 isn’t exactly a huge priority for developers. There are drawbacks to using an ultrawide monitor for gaming (many titles still don't natively support 32:9 aspect ratios).
And while first-person shooters and driving games massively benefit from an increased field of view, many story-driven titles remain solely focused on delivering a 16:9 experience. Still, the best developers do care about the 32:9 format, even if it is still niche. After a rocky launch on PC, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 looks sensational on a super ultrawide, with cutscenes of Peter’s battles against Venom looking incredibly cinematic.
Kudos to PC porting specialists, Nixxes. Regardless of what field you work in, I’m confident you’ll benefit from a more productivity-focused display. Having a third of your screen open for your word processor of choice, then another two windows for research purposes, is likely to make you more efficient. In my case, using a super ultrawide monitor makes my job on MUO easier. As part of a site that snaps a lot of bespoke images, Photoshop is pretty much an ever-present force that takes up a third of my screen.
A monitor that clocks in at 5120 x 1440 pixels allows me to edit images while simultaneously previewing how my article will appear for MUO readers. On any given workday, I normally have 15 Google Chrome tabs open across three equally proportioned windows. One is ready to edit a draft version of an article in G-Docs, another is for admiring the excellent words of my fellow MUO writers, and the third is for our CMS system.
When it comes to multitasking, it’s tough to top a super ultrawide. After living with a 32:9 monitor for well over a year, going back to a traditional widescreen display would legitimately be a nightmare on a par with being stuck in an elevator full of tarantulas for this claustrophobic arachnophobe. If you regularly work from home and feel your 16:9 monitor is letting you down, I suggest you seriously consider investing in a 32:9 display.
Quality, high-res screens have never been more affordable. If you have the funds for a super ultrawide monitor, I urge you to get in on the first floor of a more productive future.
