What we do know
From recent reporting and court filings:
- OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s firm (“io”, also referred to as LoveFrom/io) in May 2025 for about US$6.5 billion, to collaborate on consumer AI hardware. (Financial Times)
- The target device is palm-sized, screen-less, designed to take audio and visual cues (microphone, camera/s), always-on, to sense context, and respond more naturally than existing assistants (Alexa, Siri). It would sit on a desk or fit in a pocket. (Financial Times)
- Importantly, it will not be a wearable or in-ear device. Court documents explicitly say it is not earbuds or ‘wearable’ in the sense of being worn on the body like headphones or hearing devices. (India Today)
- The release timeline is still far off: the device is unlikely to ship before 2026 (some reports say “late 2026” for an initial release). Mass production may begin in 2027. (India Today)
- The project is not just hardware: in addition to the physical design, significant work is going into the device’s “personality” / interaction style, privacy concerns, and the software/infrastructure needed. (Financial Times)
- There is a trademark dispute with another startup called “iyO” over the use of the name “io” (or “IO”) which has already forced OpenAI / Ive to take down promotional materials, brand references, and adjust how they are communicating publicly. (AP News)
- The compute demands are high: running powerful AI models in a small, always-on, local device (or semi-on-device) with vision/audio inputs is technically very challenging. OpenAI is reportedly struggling with securing sufficient compute infrastructure, especially to do this at consumer scale. (Financial Times)
What challenges / “technical issues” are being reported or inferred
Based on the above, here are the main technical / product hurdles:

What are open questions / unknowns
- Exactly what hardware internals: What kind of processor(s)? Edge AI chip? How much on-device vs cloud inference? What kinds of sensors? Number and placement of cameras? Microphones? Audio hardware?
- Battery life, charging model: How long will it last? Is “always-on” meaning full time, or “listening but not continuously active”? How is power managed?
- How much of the AI model(s) run local vs remote: For latency, privacy, offline use.
- User interaction design: How will users invoke actions? By voice only? Gestures? What feedback does it give since no screen? How are errors handled?
- Cost and pricing: To hit “100 million units faster than any something new” suggests aggressive scaling; will the device be affordable relative to phones/smart speakers, etc.?
- Regulatory, privacy compliance: How will regions with stricter privacy laws (EU, etc.) respond? What policies will be in place? How will data retention work, etc.?
Implications
- If successful, this could be a new category of consumer AI device: moving away from screens, towards ambient, always-aware assistants. Could shift what we expect from “smart devices”.
- High risk if privacy / trust is mis-handled: users may resist always-on devices or distrust them; regulatory backlash possible.
- Technical leadership in optimizing AI models, hardware, edge inference could become a differentiator.
- Branding and naming (trademark issues) can slow or complicate even technical projects.
Summary / Assessment
From a technical perspective, this project is ambitious and faces serious engineering, design, and infrastructure hurdles. Many of the challenges are not unique, but several are at the intersection of multiple hard constraints: low power + strong models + privacy + good UX.
Given the timeline (2026+), the project is plausible, but a lot can still go wrong: delays, feature cuts, cost overruns. OpenAI and Ive have access to top design, engineering talent and resources, which gives them an advantage — but expectations are high.
