Microsoft Raises Xbox Prices in the U.S. Again as Tariff Pressures Mount

Sept 19  :Microsoft is increasing the prices of its Xbox gaming consoles in the United States for the second time this year, citing tariff pressures, rising supply chain costs, and a challenging economic environment.

New Prices Take Effect in October
Starting October 3, U.S. gamers will pay more for current-generation Xbox consoles:

* Xbox Series S (1TB) will cost about 450 dollars
* Xbox Series X (Standard) will cost about 650 dollars
* Xbox Series X (Galaxy Black, 2TB) will cost nearly 800 dollars

This change comes only a few months after Microsoft raised Xbox prices in May across several markets including the U.S., Europe, Australia, and the UK. In total, the Series X has become 150 dollars more expensive in just six months.

Why the Price Hike?

Microsoft explained that the increase is not about software development costs or extra profits. Instead, it is mainly due to:

* Tariffs on imports from China, where much of the production takes place
* Higher supply chain expenses
* General economic uncertainty

According to Joost van Dreunen, a games professor at NYU Stern School of Business, hardware is being repriced to absorb these new trade pressures.

Competition and Industry Pressure

Microsoft is not the only company raising prices. Sony recently increased the cost of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. by around 50 dollars. The most expensive PS5 Pro model now sells for 749.99 dollars.

At the same time, Nintendo is preparing to launch its new Switch 2 console, while big titles like Grand Theft Auto VI were expected to boost console demand this year. However, delays in game releases combined with higher console prices are making the near-term outlook for the gaming industry less certain.

Accessories Stay the Same

Microsoft confirmed that prices for controllers, headsets, and consoles in markets outside the U.S. will not change at this time.

What It Means for Gamers

With inflation already stretching household budgets, repeated price hikes may cause players to delay console upgrades, search for discounts, or reconsider which gaming system to invest in.
