Megan Rico, Kade Atwood, Adi Madden Cabrera, and McKenna Tuckett chatted about their new comedy film “Edie Arnold is a Loser.’ Megan Rico, Kade Atwood, Adi Madden Cabrera, and McKenna Tuckett chatted about their new comedy film “Edie Arnold is a Loser.” The synopsis is: Timid dork Edie (Adi Madden Cabrera) accidentally takes the spotlight when she starts a punk band with her fellow “turds,” becoming an icon to the rest of the losers at her all-girls Catholic school while managing to piss off the girls, the nuns, and the altar boy.

On the project getting to have its premiere at SXSW, Megan said, “It was kind of wild. Right now, I think we’re all feeling a little bit like, ‘what is going on?” Regarding her inspiration to write and direct this movie, Megan, “So, I wrote it and I actually went to an all-girls Catholic school, and I was a little bit of an outcast and so it definitely took a lot from my personal experience, my personal life and also my friends and the way that we speak in banter.

I wasn’t a musician, but I was angsty.” On playing Edie, Adi, “I love everything about Edie honestly. She’s so complex. I think she’s such a just like sweet, weird girl. She is so lovable.” McKenna said, “I love how big and unapologetically herself Frances is, and just how maybe the outside world might not encourage her to feel herself because she’s got headgear and she’s real awkward but she has confidence.” On the lessons learned from the screenplay, Kade said, “I guess I was surprised how strongly I related to the movie.

Megan told me the premise, Megan wrote it and then, she sent me it, and I thought it was cool.” “I read through it in one sitting and so fast and loved every minute of it,” he said. “I just feel like these were characters that I really related to growing up and felt like I hadn’t necessarily seen this kind of representation in a script before.” “So, I was really excited about that and learned that perhaps I’m a little bit of a weirdo,” he added.

On co-directing this comedy with Megan, Kade said, “It was great. We worked really well together.” “It was so fun to have someone to constantly bouncing off ideas with and I think we’re always bringing something to each other’s idea of like sanding essentially and running with something and taking an idea and seeing how far we can push it,” he elaborated. On being a part of the digital age, Megan said with a sweet laugh, “I hate it!” “I think I’m the only one who feels that way though,” she noted.

“It feels difficult to connect with people as much through a screen but on the flip side Kade and I don’t live in the same city… Kade is based in Salt Lake City and I’m based in New York so we would not have been able to make this film if we didn’t have all those tools at our disposal.” McKenna said, “When it comes to auditions there is something really magical about doing an audition in person with the people who are intending to make the film and it’s definitely a challenge kind of streamlining that magic and charisma over like over an iPhone.” “So self-tapes are definitely an adjustment, but it also has made things a lot more convenient,” McKenna noted.

Adi said, “I honestly don’t know any different, I’m not gonna lie. The digital age is all I have ever known.” For young and aspiring actors and filmmakers, Adi said, “Honestly, for me, I think to just keep trying like there’s a role out there for everybody.” “I think with me and Edie I felt so strongly that it was written for me. While that might sound a bit conceited, I just think that there is something out there for everybody.” There’s a director that wants somebody who looks just like you so just keep going an you will find it,” she noted.

On his definition of success, Kade said, “For us, it was just making a movie. It’s crazy that we even made this and even crazier that we’re in SXSW, so I feel like anything else is really exciting bonus.” “I think for Megan and me it was really about making the film… the process is the part that we enjoy the most, and putting it out in the world is really fun too,” he noted. Megan said, “I think success is being able to continue to make films that we think are good on our own terms… that is the dream.” For fans and viewers, Megan expressed, “I think we mostly want people to laugh a lot.

I think we want people to laugh very much and also we want the weird little girls to have a movie for them.” “Looking back if I were in the 13 to 19 age group, I feel this would be my favorite movie, and I would watch it a million times in a row. I think if this becomes one weird girl’s favorite movie, then I think we’ve done our job,” Megan concluded. Markos Papadatos is Digital Journal's Editor-at-Large for Music News.
